Before you travel to Vietnam, it is important to do research about the weather to make sure of an enjoyable trip. One first thing you must remember is that Vietnam is a tropical monsoon climate, so the weather depends heavily on the rain and regions. In this post, we will show you the overall weather patterns in this country.

Toggle1. Northern Vietnam
The Northern Vietnam is generally divided into 2 parts: North East (Hanoi, Halong, Ha Giang,…) and North West (Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Son La,…). Both parts have many similarities in term of weather and seasons. The best time to visit the Northern Vietnam is during October and November when the temperature ranges from 20 to 30 degrees. Moreover, the weather is sunny and the humidity is quite low which is perfect for traveling around.
During the winter season (about December to February), the Northern Vietnam is the coldest region in Vietnam. Low temperature, 0°C to 17°C, added with high humidity indicating a bad time to visit the North.
From March to April, the weather gets better and you can travel during spring. It is an excellent opportunity to venture through the North West since the temperature is lower than in the North East plain. The average temperature here is about 25°C with high humidity and sometimes drizzling.
The rest of the year is the summer season which is extremely hot, from 28°C to 35°C, because climate changes like El Niño are increasing the temperature over the year. Heavy rains and mists may occur and make traveling difficult both in the plain and on the hill.
2. Central Coastal
There is a quite similar pattern between the North and Central Coastal with a few notable differences. In Hue, the weather is good from March until August and then the stormy and cold season starts for all other months.
In other provinces like Hoi An, Danang, Quy Nhon, the best time to visit is from March to May. The following summer season is really hot, average 30°C, and has showers in the evening. Typhoon season may hard to predict, but it usually begins from September to November. Finally, the region will turn into winter period.
3. Central Highland
Most of the time, Central Highland offers good weather for visitors from October to May. The temperature is only about 20-30oC with high humidity and heat mist. It is important to know that the temperature drops quickly at night.
Other than that time, the region will enter the dry season (or rainy season in Dalat). As a result, you will not be recommended to visit Central Highland from June to September.
4. Southern Vietnam
Unlike the North, Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc,…) only has the rainy and dry season in a year. During the dry season, the weather is pleasant with sunshine and good temperature (28-32°C).
Rainy season starts from May to October with exceptions such as Nha Trang(from October to January). Heavy rain can easily ruin your entire vacation by causing flooding and horrible weather on the beach.
