Cable Car through Phong Nha – Ke Bang Now with Prime Minister’s Support

Even after the government announced that there will be no construction in Phong Nha – Ke Bang till 2030. This still further amplifies the controversy over building cable car through the largest cave system in the world.

The current Prime Minister of Vietnam, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, showed his support for the plan which Quang Ninh province decided a long time ago. At the meeting between him and the province, Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that the government agrees on the basic principle of the plan.

This project caused a lot of controversy among cave lovers, but the province still wants to construct a cable car running from Ho Chi Minh High Way to En Cave. The Prime Minister, however, still warned the province “not to damage this special tourism site and exploit it too much after finished”. He also added that the culture and tourism ministry must see through all the risks and ask UNESCO for opinions.

Though Hang En is only the third largest cave in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, it still stretches 2000 meters deep into the mountain, featuring magnificent stalactites and stalactites in Vietnam. The National Park itself has become a tourism spot lately with over 30 caves in the area. As a result, a great concern regarding preserving this National Park.

In 2014, the cable car project had received numerous complaint in the start due to the plan of installing a gondola life in Son Doong, the largest cave in the world. A petition even conducted to gather support from UNESCO and others in the world, causing the government to cancel this plan.

Cable car is not a rare sight in the country nowadays, and people are believing that the government exchanges the beautiful nature for the sake of tourism industry. Halong Bay and the tallest mountain in South East Asia, Fansipan, have already been installed a cable car.

With this support from the Prime Minister, Thua Thien – Hue is also pursuing a cable car project in Bach Ma National Park. This is, no doubt, continue to be a controversy for the local and natural lovers in the country.
